On the 23rd and 24th of September, the Bright Futures Academy returns in partnership with BAM North, welcoming 15 new learners from across the Northern region to begin an intensive 8-to-10-month development journey.
Supported by Danny Thomson, Building Services Operations Manager at BAM Construction North, this marks the Academy's third cohort. Following successful partnerships with BAM Western in 2024 and Willmott Dixon in 2025, the programme continues to deliver measurable social value impact, recognised by multiple partner awards.
What is the Bright Futures Academy?
Delivered through Whitecroft’s Ignite Academy and led by Tim Bowes (Head of Lighting Design) and Amanda Rushby (Head of Business Development), Bright Futures is a comprehensive professional development programme. It is specifically designed to equip new industry starters and young professionals with critical expertise in commercial lighting theory, smart building technologies, and circularity principles.

What are the Core Benefits of the Bright Futures Academy?
The programme is structured to deliver immediate value to both the learners and their wider teams:
- Targeted Upskilling: Learners acquire practical, technical knowledge in lighting design, compliance, smart building integration, and waste reduction.

How is the Learner Journey Structured?
The Bright Futures programme is broken down into five distinct phases to ensure comprehensive skill development:
1. Immersive Launch Event at Whitecroft HQ
A two-day initial experience designed to build confidence in a safe-to-fail environment. This includes meet-the-expert sessions, facility tours, project setting, and structured networking activities.
2. Tailored Regional CPDs
The cohort regroups for two focused Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions. Topics are specifically tailored to the group's evolving knowledge base, covering critical areas such as emergency lighting and regulatory compliance.
3. Hands-On In-Office Workshops
Dedicated mentors deliver practical product workshops directly in the workplace. Sessions such as ‘It’s Not Just a Light’ and ‘Let’s Make it Smart’ encourage learners to actively engage their colleagues in the learning process.
4. On-Demand Digital Learning
To accommodate different learning styles and schedules, digital modules are released in stages. Each module concludes with an assessment, providing learners with shareable certification upon completion.
5. Dedicated Personal Mentorship
Every learner is assigned a mentor for the duration of the programme. Mentors initiate contact before the launch event to provide logistical support and assist with travel. Throughout the course, they ensure consistent support, offering repeated sessions (online or in-office) and extracurricular workshops, such as on-demand Relux lighting calculations, if a learner requires additional help.
What is Required for Graduation?
Previous cohorts have maintained an exceptionally high success rate. To graduate, learners must attend the scheduled online sessions, complete all digital modules, and deliver a collaborative final project.
During the final month, participants work in groups to develop a comprehensive lighting project. Their solution is presented at the graduation ceremony alongside physical product samples, demonstrating the technical and practical skills acquired throughout the programme.
