Midland Metropolitan University Hospital

CASE STUDY

Patient-First, Energy-Smart Lighting

As one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the UK, Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick required a lighting solution that reflected its commitment to the highest standards of patient-focused care, combining comfort, safety, energy efficiency, and clinical performance.

In partnership with Balfour Beatty, Whitecroft delivered a fully LED solution tailored to the precise needs of every space. From tuneable lighting in theatres and scanner suites to colour-changing systems in maternity and neonatal areas, each space was designed to support patient wellbeing and clinical excellence.

A utility room illuminated by evenly spaced, surface-mounted linear batten lights on a solid white ceiling, casting functional, uniform light over several robotic transport carts.
A brightly lit hospital ward featuring continuous, recessed linear LED light fixtures integrated into a suspended ceiling grid, with supplementary natural daylight entering from a window on the left.
A medical preparation room featuring large, rectangular, recessed LED lighting panels in the ceiling, delivering high-intensity, shadow-free illumination over a medication cabinet and workstation.

The solution

In a facility as large and complex as Midland Met, lighting design also had to support infection control. Backed by extensive expertise, Whitecroft’s Healthcare range is engineered for hygiene and resilience, featuring sealed, easy-to-clean luminaires that withstand the most demanding hospital cleaning protocols.

Energy efficiency was embedded throughout, with Prologik’s advanced smart lighting system, featuring daylight sensing, time-based control, and kinetic switches delivering up to 30% energy savings compared to alternative schemes while ensuring long-term, low-carbon performance.

Durable, 100,000-hour LEDs advanced BREEAM ambitions by reducing replacements and facility management workloads.
