Finding and nurturing the right talent has always been a challenge, not just within manufacturing, but across every part of our industry. At Whitecroft Lighting, we've long recognised that apprenticeships are one of the most powerful ways to grow skills, build careers, and shape the future of Whitecroft.
That’s why we chose to support Tameside College’s Train Tameside 500 initiative, launched in partnership with Tameside Council. This two-year campaign aims to create 500 new apprenticeships across the borough, addressing the region’s growing skills needs in key sectors such as manufacturing, construction, automotive, and health and social care. The programme helps build sustainable, long-term careers across Greater Manchester.
Speaking at the launch event, Tim Bowes represented Whitecroft Lighting, highlighting how apprenticeships continue to play a vital role in helping Whitecroft deliver on our mission: to share our knowledge and deliver creative, circular lighting solutions that transform the health and prosperity of communities for generations.
“Our relationship with Tameside College spans more than nine years, during which we’ve embedded apprentices across almost every area of our business. Today, 30% of our workforce is either currently undertaking or has completed an apprenticeship, demonstrating just how deeply skills development is embedded in our culture. We have gone from struggling to recruit apprentices to now receiving lots of enquiries from students.
When you look at our values and our collaboration, you can see these values being lived every day:
- Curious Creators – We know there’s incredible, curious talent in our community. Through Whitecroft Ignite, we’re working with Tameside College to give that talent a home to grow and innovate.
- Committed Together – Our partnership with the College benefits both sides, from exploring new projects and technologies to sharing materials, equipment, and ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible.
- Aiming Higher – By helping local people develop new skills, we’re empowering our community to succeed and shape the industries of the future.”
Expanding Our Talent Pathways
We’ve also expanded our approach beyond traditional apprenticeships to include programmes such as T Level placements, structured work experience, and school safaris. Much of this activity is supported through Whitecroft Ignite, our dedicated space for learning, collaboration, and innovation. This extends into several key areas:
- Talent Development – T Level content, student placements, and school safaris.
- Projects – Supporting Tameside College with specialist training on lighting and smart control systems.
Industry Recognition
Over the past two years, the Department for Education have recognised our initiatives and the people within Northwest Apprenticeship and Skills Awards, receiving multiple awards and commendations in the following categories:
- 2024 – Highly Commended Apprentice of the Year (Elliot Davey)
- 2025 – Large Apprenticeship Employer of the Year
- 2025 – Higher Apprentice of the Year (Marcelina Fila)
- 2025 – Skills Champion of the Year (our Learning and Development Officer, Warren Young)
These achievements reflect the dedication of every apprentice, mentor, and manager who makes Whitecroft a place where talent thrives.
Looking Ahead
Our commitment to developing local talent continues to grow. By 2026, we will be creating 14 new apprenticeship positions and four T Level opportunities, ensuring we continue to invest in the people and skills that will shape the future of both Whitecroft and the wider region.
As Warren puts it best:
“It’s about keeping local talent and empowering Greater Manchester businesses to thrive together.”
